You have named the problem with AI perfectly. It robs us of the struggle that is the heart of creativity. Necessity is still the mother of invention!

It absolutely is! :) And exactly: the process *is* the way. And the joy and the satisfaction and the growth and more... in short, pretty much all of the good stuff about making art! AI on the other hand is completely outcome-, not process-driven. It's not interested in the 'why' or the 'how' - just the end product.

Love all of this, thank you. I can feel the energy leaping of the screen, enjoy mucking about with that pile of mud on the table.

Totally agree about AI. It makes me feel so upset that people will undoubtedly lose a vital stage in their creativity. And the Anne Lamott quote made me laugh out loud!

Yes it makes me upset too, and is an absolutely key reason why I rail against gen AI being pushed to people doing creative work, whether because it’s apparently ‘inevitable’ or ‘helpful’ (I believe both are bullshit!). I love that Lamont quote, and think of it now every time I’m lugging a load of mud onto a table, ie writing a first draft 😂
